My Personal Review of The Monkey Nuts @theMonkiNuts #SOON EP

Image

After thinking long and hard, I thought its best I start with a true story analogy, to help frame “my personal review” that you are about to read in the right context:

Before I left the UK, I had the pleasure of watching ‘Avatar’ in 3D at the iMAX in London. I was blown away. The depth, the feeling, the incredible detail and CGI that James Camron and team put into it was evident for a brilliant 2hr ride. I got totally lost in ‘Pandora’ and fell in love with the ‘Navii’.

Upon my return to Zim, I found a Bootleg DVD copy of ‘Avatar’ in a pile of DVD’s bought from Avondale flea market, at my Sister Chido’s crib.  I told her “YO! This is the BEST movie...” and she said... “I thought it was SHIT!”. I thought she was crazy, but when I put it into the DVD player, I realized why... It was a poor ‘2D bootleg with Mono audio track’ of a ‘7.1 Dolby Surround 3D Blockbuster’.

It was no longer the immersive work of genius I had watched 3 times at the iMAX in London, it was now a fucking poor rip off of ‘Polcahantas,' ‘Dancing with the Wolves’, ‘The Last Samurai’ and all those many other cliché’s of movies.  Without the 3D 7.1 Dolby to give perspective, ‘Avatar’ sucked in a bootleg form.

How does this relate to the Monkey Nuts??

Well, I first experienced the Monkey Nut at SHOKO 2012. I was blown away. It was the night of Mash-Ups and they had Hope join them for some of their songs. As a band they where phenomenal. Their Look was just DOPE! Their Sound was futuristic and unmatched by any band in Zim. Then it was a 4 piece: JC (Front Man), Tino Tagz (Synths), Impi (Lead) & Dweebbler (Bass). (Not sure about my spellings, but I’m sure the lads will correct me if I’m wrong.)

I have since seen them about +/- 7 times at different venues, and every time, I’m in awe of these young bros. they are very “real” and Josh is lyrically up there with some of the dopest lyricist. I ain’t seen Dweebler in a while, heard he be overseas studying (He's even off the website ), so now they have Aston on Bass and they added Zim’s most incredible Drummer, Leeroy, to their set.

I now, pretty much, know their tracks. I’ve sung along and always try and catch their live sets!

I looked forward to #SOON (Something Out of Nothing) since they first announced in the fourth of 2012. So when it dropped it was déjå-vu. ‘MC Chita’s Ambassadors Son” all over again.

Shit! I wanted to like it... really. I knew the songs well and wanted to relive the feeling I get when JC shouts out “I refuse to Lose!” or “Light the Fire LET IT BURN!” with that triumphant voice... but alas...

City on the Hill (Ft. Dikson)

The first voice you hear is Dikson, who, lets face it, isn’t exactly Aura the Poet, slamming “poetry” un-rhythmically over the dissonance of a mixture of Mbira’s (read: Nyunganyunga) and Synths.  This weird juxtapose, I guess is to highlight something, but Dikson seriously seriously was probably not the best choice for opening up a Debut EP. I have listened again, for the sake of this review, and I still don’t know what the fuck he’s on about. Guess he is the Exec producers bro... so... Whats a Zim project without some nepotism?? (I kid; I Kid)

For those without audio software installed, here’s a basic, cross platform free audio editor for you to “De-Dikson-ify” this track, just cut off the first 1min 15 Secs. It improves greatly once u do that, coz JC is lyrically very dope. Unfortunately he’s mixed very low in the track as compared to the dissonant soup he’s swimming in.

The heart breaking moment is when the normally triumphant, defiant “Light the Torch let it BURN” which josh normally rallies the crowd to join in and chant as he screams in the mic, sounds mute and numb, with a bit of an echo. Taking you back to my analogy at the top. Having experienced this song live, (without Dikson), this recording does not do the song justice.

Afrotech (ft. OutSpoken)

Starts off with a Sitar like intro to a war movie. Sounds DOPE!! The Drums are that HIPHOP, head banger. The Lyricists are inspired here. JC holds his own against arguably the best lyricist on the Continent OutSpoken, proving his pedigree.

The Song is another myriad of social commentary from both MC’s.

I have NO idea what the first chorus says. Its got tons of that warp, verby spacey effect. Inaudible. The Second Chorus, OutSpoken does the “singing”... ah well, after that stellar verse, he is forgiven! In fact, this is lyrically the best HIPHOP record on #SOON. Impi’s gits are haunting... Tino Tagz’ synths paint a perfect sound scope. This is one of the Songs I haven’t heard live, so was actually a pleasure to hear without the 3Dv2D bias.

Mapfunde - ReMix (ft. Hope Masike)

Welcome Miss Hope Masike. Every one knows this is my SHIT! That Mbira, them Shona vocals... that HIPHOP... ahhh heaven!!!! The song takes the traditional Shona hymnal, Josh’s verse is not about games and innocence. I guess the song is a highlight of the paradox of Youth and Real life.

My only gripe is that Josh is again mixed very very low!!! Song is too short, would have loved to hear Josh have a verse 2. The Avatar analogy again comes back... Josh delivers with such emotion live, and the Sound scope is sooooooo 3D live. It looses some of it soul in the recording. (u are going to hear this a lot!)

Lost in the City (ft. Hope Masike)

Very dope sound scape on this record. The drums now, after hearing Leeroy, seem like stock loops. Hope again lifts the track with very strong vocals. Josh isn’t nearly as upfront in the mix, as one would like for a Frontman, which improves in Second Verse oddly... which then ducks again when the drums kick in.

Ndapedza (ft. Hope Masike)

This is Josh’s BEST VERSES! I rewound this tune many times and is the most played in my iTunes.

Hope is very high in this tune, as compared to when the boys have had to do it themselves when Hope isn’t there live. The tune is uplifting. I fucking love it.

“I refuse to loose... in this game called ‘life’”

One of the EP’s Standouts.

========================================

Conclusion

Lyrically, JC goes deep on this EP. He’s like a Black Thought.  People will always hail The Roots and forget theres one MC at the helm.  He’s the most important member of the band as far as I’m concerned. He holds them together by stitching the Music with the Meaning and the Emotions.

I’m beginning to notice that you could string all his verses into One song, coz content wise they are very similar in the themes... Dear World, Social commentary, Demonic Concept illusions????? Don’t know what that is, but sounds pretty cool though menacing!! He's a smart dude. Who doesn’t try to make you ‘Happy’ or make you dance.

His performances on this EP, thus far, do not resemble the MC we see on stage (I know I know, I’ve said this plenty already). I don’t know if it was being rushed in the studio, or who was present or having no-one shouting “No- please retake that line!”, but sometime the emotion doesn’t come through.

Examples:

“Screaming out LOUD till the whole word hear it...” City on a Hill - one would expect Josh to really articulate this line, with a higher cadence, velocity and conviction. He just says it.

“Its funny how u make things change in an instant...” Ndapedza - on a line like that... a Jay-Z would definitely make you hear the sarcasm, slight chuckle and irony of that sentence. Josh delivers it flat.

Musically the Band plays well. Very well, but they aren’t always mixed well. The multiple layers of their sound scope is often flattened.

The mixture of Hiphop/Electro and Mbira is awesome. Hope Masike is a star. The A&R who put these guys together is genius. The Monkey Nuts make Hope COOL, and she give the Monkey Nuts that authentic Afro swag. On stage they work well together and on record, its like they are the same band. It never feels like a contrived mistake (read: unlike Track 1 ft. Dikson).

Now I don’t actually have the credits for #SOON, all I know is the Exec producers are OutSpoken & Comrade Fatso. Exec producers, in the traditional sense of the word, would be the financiers of the product, with little creative input. So I don’t know if the Exec Producer title is in the traditional sense or they actually where hands on in the production. They must however be commended in believing in the band and putting in, what must have been, a lot of work! Live bands and Live Sound recording isn’t easy.

The person I would like to shoot for #SOON has to be whoever on the EP who was considered to be where the “buck stops”. The actual project producer. The person who finalized the mix and thought to mix the main cog of the Monkey Nuts engine, JC, down & submerged. The person who took a 3D sound that we all love and flattened it into 2D, with very little depth. Better direction on the vocalist to get the best performance, would have helped elevate the emotions on the tracks and made the verses less interchangeable.

See; everyone in #ZimHipHop who I have spoken too, has pretty much felt the same way. #SOON is a BIG moments of 2013.  No body had anything bad to say about the band, everybody said they love the ‘Hope & monkey Nuts’ mix, Everyone who has seen them live doesn’t believe for a sec that this is the best we could get from our favorite band. Its the curse of being GREAT. Not bad... Good enough... these are superlatives that people find hard to say next to a Great Band.

Maybe I set the bar way to high for these lads. I know that if they sucked on stage, I probably would really dig all these records. it’s just that I have personally heard then sound a lot better. I’m hoping on their LP, they manage to capture that magic in a studio.

Hot air??? #ZimRef2013 cc: @ComradeFatsooo & @kubatana

Just read a tweet from Cde. Fatso, which led me to a blog by "kubatana" about the new Zim Referendum.

Found the post interesting... mirroring a lot of my cynicism (I be THAT guy)...

However their reason for scoffing at the referendum, wasn't because of obvious inequality issues ignored, elephants in the room denied or blatant over looking of important issues like citizenship; which plagues people who now live in a much smaller world (My own small househiold has serious issues/conflicts)... Also be very very suspicious about anything that ALL sides think is a GREAT IDEA!... however...

Kubatana thinks the Referendum is "funny" coz there isn't any money for the "Promises"...

Very sad. Coz the things they highlighted are actually important to be constitutionally bound... Education, Pensions, impartial Armed forces etc.

The NO campaign needs to hit with a more intelligent argument than, "why vote yes when they don't have money!"

The Abolishment of Slavery was LAW for years before some of the South bothered to recognize it... and still Martin Luther and Malcolm X where born unequal and Barack only moved into the "white" house 150yrs after.

Ok so its not funded... but isn't it a good aspiration??

Anyways... what ever... I'm voting with the Biggest United Party in the WORLD.... The Apathy party... Hence the only voting I'm doing paWeekend, is Not.

Coz Democracy is just a Wolf, Lion, Bear, Hyena and Lamb being all asked to vote for whats for dinner.

Dueces.

Dear @Telecel_Zim, Why I think "Red" is a rip off. cc @Zororomakamba @techzim

Dear Telecel

I've been a champion of your product offering for nearly 2 years now. I have converted many many of my friends, family and colleagues to Telecel. When we saw the teasers in the Newspaper for the new "Red" contracts with "unlimited" offering, we all caught semi-boners and thought: FINALLY!

Then we read the offering and those semi's regressed quickly. telecel Red contract is a RIP OFF!

Your offering me "unlimited" calls to 1 telecel number, $30 of calls, texts or data to all local numbers and 60mbs for $30 of my hard earned US Dollars.

Now, if I buy $30 Airtime (1 $20 voucher 1 $5 Voucher & 1 $5 SMS) heres what I can get:

I will put 400MBS for $20, which are more important to me, so I can get Unlimited Whatsapps, Unlimited Viber calls and messages to 99% of my Friends Family and Clients worldwide, FaceTime my Wife and all the emails, on my iPhone for 30 days (trust me, I do this already and often had Mbs to spare by having wifi at home also)

I then take $5 for MegaSMS which gives me 125 texts cross platform for those few NOT on Whatsapp, Viber, Skype, Email

then $5 calls for those few NOT on Telecel, Viber, Skype, Facetime, Tango etc.

Remember, by buying a $30 (1 $20 voucher 1 $5 Voucher & 1 $5 SMS), I automatically get $25 Telecel - Telcel, thats any telecel number. at your current costs Thats nearly 2 hours of calls.

Thanks to your "Mega Magic" promition I also get 60 free SMS's on my $20 Voucher and 15 Free SMS's on my $5 Voucher... total 200 SMS's including my $5 SMS Strips.

So summary - in lay mans terms $30, gets me:

Close to Half a GigaByte of WhatsApp, Viber, Skype, GMail, Facetime, Tango, Twitter and Facebook which pretty much means unlimited.
200 SMS's
2hrs Telcel to Telecel
$5 cross network calls
NO Binding Contract at ALL.

Now, if You give me $60 to play with then, damn, I can get $45 1 GigaByte Bundle, and $15 extra to play with for SMS, cross network calls etc and $40 Bonus Telcel to Telecel???

for the $150 I would go CRAZY!!!! literally CRAZZZZZYYY!!

Unfortunately for you... or fortunately for US, your consumer, your Pre-Paid deal is the best in the market.  Your 3G works well (though spotty) and Bonus minutes are fantastic.

Why would you not just SELL THAT, and not this RED DUD!???

Please telecel, fire your agency... and whip your marketing department! Telecel pre-Paid SELL ITSELF! this RED is Nonsense.

Regards

#NGNGv2 - The Home Coming Review

(As with Syn City, conflict of intrest made it impossible for me to do an objective review without the screams of bias. So I asked MC Chita to write up a proper review! Read On! BSun!!)

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! Fuck! Fuck! Fuck! Sorry. But FUCK! I was supposed to be on this album! I was even in studio for one of the tracks. It was… Ummm… Okay that time of the year was a bit of a blur, but yeah I was supposed to be there somewhere. Anyway moving on, after two back to back listens, I feel I am now in the perfect position to give an honest, non biased opinion about this Mixtape.

You can tell that Karizma, aka Its Karizma, aka The Real Karizma, aka Yolo, has been planning this moment for a while. He placed himself in a position of influence and recognition in the Zim Hip-Hop industry by affiliating himself with a winning team. He had two five star verses on two of Zimbabwe’ largest releases in 2012 (#S.O.T.G.3 and Syn City). And when the streets were starving for something new, #NGNGV.2 landed.

The guest list and catering (that’s feature and producers) add to the hype of the album. The usual suspects (Tehn, Synik, Jnr Brown, Begotten, Five, etc) bring their A’ game to the table… in most cases. A couple surprise guests brought an added twist to the album, which I feel is what really makes this album worth the wait. So without further ado, let’s get into it.

The Cover
(by @RufaroD)

The cover  was pretty dang slick. It’s simple, original, and it tells a story. You’d have to be pretty slow not to get it. It’s not groundbreaking or jaw dropping amazing, but it makes sense. Plus it goes with the theme of the album. It makes a bit of a statement though. Especially if you think of these things from a political point of view. I’m just saying.

Intro
(Prod Crunka Cris)

Crunka Cris sets the tone with cinematic chords which get your attention immediately. You hear Karizma explain the definition of #NGNG. Then he gets into it. Unfortunately, I see people skipping this track. The 64 bar verse stretches a bit far and can go over a lot of people’ heads. A 64 bar verse is no easy feat, and there are points where Karizma struggles with it. Shame, because I feel he could’ve done better on this track. There are some parts where his genius shines through, ¨bad luck something, like Satans on me…¨, but unfortunately they few and far between. Too many a-b-c bars in this one.

Swag Yakawandisa
(Prod. PhatPhat)

Now this that… bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce. YEEEEAAAAAHHHHH!!!! Hahahaha, big tune. Phat-Phat on the beat. You can tell this guy has spent most his life in bars watching chicks bounce that, you know what I’m talking about. I can already see the chicks doing it like they do it for TV. Here Karizzy (that’s his other-other-other aka) is in his element. Two-stepping with the beat, he mixes a bit of the real, with what he knows best, SWAG. For real the tune got swag YAKAWANDISA. It spills out them speakers.

Drink in My Cup
(Prod. by @YagiDojo)

Word up. Swag on a hundred, thousand, trillion. I can hear this track in the club being mixed with that Loverance joint feat 50 cent. This is going to be a hit for a while. Yagi Dojo on the beat, it’s relevant to todays market, still it has a very mature feel. This is definitely one for my playlist. The hook is classic. Catchy and gangster. Combined with his storytelling flows ¨kush got it lookin like mist in the air/ me and my mans, three chicks in the rear/ headin to the spot, my clicks up in there, top teams in the city they be listin us, yeah…¨, make this one of my favorite cuts on the album.

Havazi Kuita feat TehnDiamon, Jnr Brown and Synik
(Prod. @ThatDutch)

Best Collaboration Nomination, now please. Too soon? Okay, we’ll see what the rest of the year has in store, but this is quite a bar which has been set. That Dutch on the beat, it definitely is an anthem for this year. It’s round about here that I realize that one of Karizmas’ strong suit is his hooks. Then he managed to get Tehn (Mr ¨arrive in a fitted and leave in a suit and tie¨), Jnr Brown and Synik on the same joint. #ThisReallyAintFair. Anyway I don’t think I can really think of anything to say anything against this tune. And trust me, I’ve tried. ¨Im with The Real Karizma, WHAT THE F*** U TALKIN BOUT¨

My Team Winning feat Juan Take
(Prod. by @YagiDojo)

¨I don’t know how to lose… I missed them lessons¨ It’s that ignorant shit you love. Yagi Dojo back behind the boards, and he brought his evil monkey with him. So far we are five tracks into the tape, and so far, besides the intro has been nothing but hits, no misses. Same goes for this track. ¨I got the whole game, waiting on my next inning/ and few niggas girls, trynna hop up in my linens…¨ But as much as Karizma bullied the beat, the man who stole this show on this joint was Juan Take. Last time we heard this kid was on #S.O.T.G.3, and since then he been working on his game ¨and your boy talk fly, like a parrot on the roof¨. Need I say more.

Tsvarakadenga feat Kazz and T.K. Paradza
(Prod. by @ftrftrftr)

So this one is for the grown and sexy. Ftr on the beat, it is very reminiscent of the tracks which made artists like ExQ and Stunner the house hold names which they are today. In fact there might be some who feel that Karizma may have even jacked their style on this one. Kazz and T.K’s presence on this track are really what make it the hit it is. However, Karizma does come through hard, definitely something for the ladies to go GaGa over. As for me, I’m going to stick to that gangster shit. But good tune, still.

Bushman
(Prod. @Gobbla)

Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! ¨they say I smoke beats like a Benson…¨ Hahahaha. I love these U.K garage type joints. Gobbla on the beat, it is in the perfect position on the tape especially after the double dose of cheesecake I just went through. Karizzy brings back that gangster flow, adding a bit that tongue twister flow. That combined with a few lyrical gymnastics ¨I’m doin fine, peep the ascention/ turn that potential, into momentum/ when I drop tracks, you can peep from the mentions, they say I smoke beats like a Benson…¨

Moving
(Prod. by @YagiDojo)

Karizzy and Yagi got a good connection going on between them. Beats which I wouldn’t choose for my projects, Karizzy seems to shine hard on them. Here is a typical example of which. I was close to skipping until I heard the opening bars, ¨certified no examination, rap surgeon never been a patient/ the team is made of hip-hop made men, touch more souls than the pavement, amen…¨ Yeah, they work well together. That’s maybe because I’m a sucker for that old school gangster shit. I don’t know if this song will be everybodies cup of tea, but if you like your hip-hop hardcore and with punchlines, then this one’s for you. ¨Put the smash on these records, like Usain Bolt.¨

Ma Passport feat Jnr Brown
(Prod. by @ftrftrftr)

And we’re back, or should I say H-towns most wanted, Jnr Brown is back. But where you’d think Karizma would just kick back and let Jnr Brown carry the track (hook master at work), Karizma does the opposite. The punch lines just keep coming relentlessly on this track ¨passport pimpin, catch flights not feelins/ keta tato ndindira, international business…¨, or we could refer to ¨one stamp, two stamps, three stamps, four/ ma page ye passport tapera, I need more/ cause I fly up and down like a see-saw, touch new places and tell you wat we saw…¨. It’s a wild tune, definitely one to look forward to live. FTR brings the heat with the beat, however the song is very reminiscent of some of Stunner and Doctor Clarances earlier hits.

Ndombonzani feat Begotten Sun and mUnetsi
(Prod. by @ftrftrftr)

This is another one of my favorites. Don’t get me wrong, as much as I feel tunes like Ma Passport, Swag Yakawandisa etc, it is the out of the box music which really keeps this tape alive. Begotten rips the track apart with his unorthodox Shona flow, ¨ndombonzani ko, begotten sun in law/ mukwasha whe, hukasha, ano busta madiro…¨. But the icing on the cake is the awakening of the sleeping giant, the Mighty mU. What he say again? ¨I’m too strong for you, YOU AS WEAK AS YOUR PASSWORD!!!¨ Nerds.

Dreams So Big feat TehnDiamond
(Prod. by PhatPhat)

Mmmmmmph. I don’t know about this joint. Tight concept, but it seems a bit too experimental. Phat Phat gets it right on the snares but loses it on the kicks. Compared to other tracks on the tape the mix seems a bit rushed. When you finally hear what TehnDiamond is singing on the hook, it makes more sense, but before you do, it just sounds… weird. Karizma goes hard on the track, wearing his heart on his sleeve as he takes his listeners through his dreams, ambitions and fears. Unfortunately, looks like most people will skip this one.

Love and War feat Davina
(Prod. by @rymez)

You can hear this can be a big hit as soon as the track starts. Rymez on the beat, and though this is the first piece of work I’ve heard from him, his reputation precedes him and is well deserved. The track got that old school bounce to it, think Murder Inc 01’ or Cassidy and that other chick, you know Swizz Beat’ ex. Davina adds a nice touch to the tune, but nothing amazing. Karizma reverts back to his storytelling jitsu, you know the story, guy meets girl, girl with someone else, still they hook up, yeah-yeah we heard this before. Safe song, but there are better ones on the tape.

Heartless
(Prod. Emkay)

Hmmm. I like this one. It’s real, it’s original, it’s soul baring. Hear Karizma examines his relationship with Hip-Hop, and asks several questions which anyone chasing a dream would ask themselves, especially when things don’t work out so much as planned. ¨you never told me it would be this hard, when you sold me those dreams of the cd charts/ and even though you said we’d be this far, you didn’t tell me it would change me can you see these scars…¨ Emkay delivers on the beat, which even without the lyrics forces one to do some soul searching. Not for the weak at heart.

Summer O Twelve
(Prod. @BegottenSun)

Okay first of all who the hell made this beat, and can I get one for myself. Wow… Signature Begotten Sun here!  This is what made Syn City a hit album, and I can see this being the trend of Zim Hip-Hop for a long time to come. The outro of the mixtape, and yeah this is another one of my favorites. Karizma goes Karizzy with the bars addressing the haters, ¨they think that it was sudden how I popped up, I hear about em a couple bloggers are not chuffed/ they be like ‘why he think he hot stuff’, see me at the shows like, ‘how’s he on the rosta’…¨ and pretty much enjoying his position in the game. ¨musical excursions to the hills, biggest show in town, guess who’s on the bill...¨. A great way to close the album ¨Its an intro not an outro…¨ this is one of the tracks that really shine one the mixtape.

Conclusion

Besides from a shaky track one, this mixtape is quite impressive. It has a strong supporting cast but still Karizma does not get overshadowed by it. This will definitely silence some of his old critics, though it will expose him to a host of new ones. There will be a lot of comparisons between him and several other big names in the industry. Yet this project was a massive effort and it shows. Very few artists in this genre will be able to match the quality of this album. Definitely a great standard to set for 2013. Good looking out for the shout out. 4/5.

Bless.
